It took the better part of two years…

…but I got it. Now I can move into a new apartment. And with the extra money I’ll get from the job bonus, I’ll be living well, or at least better than I’ve been. I can’t wait to see the looks o their faces, my sisters, my brother, my parents. Now that Im of age, there’s nothing that can stop me.

“Hey Walrus!”

No, not now. I was so close.

“Walrus, I’m talking to you.”

I turned to look at Milo, all 6’2″ of him. It was too late to run, he and his buddies were already on top of me.

“Hey, huh, hi, ma, ma, Milo. Wha, wha, wha….”

“Wha, wha, wha. See guys? He sounds just like a walrus.” Then he laughed, in my face while his buddies surrounded me. They laughed too, whether at my stutter or what’s about to happen I wasn’t sure.

It was quick. One of his buddies grabbed my backpack while Milo talked about me owing him money. They took it all, my money, my wallet. Then pushed me to the ground like I was trash. The laughter never stopped.

I was so close. I looked into the sky, watching my dreams float away like feathers in the wind. And through it all, I had just one thought.

My name is Walter.
