…who wonder why there is so much space in space. Some scientists believe that the distances between galaxies can be attributed to The Big Bang, as it flung galaxies far and wide, in no discernible direction, to somehow fill up space. These scientists were wrong, and have been flogged in front of an audience of fifty-thousand, so there may be as many witnesses to the event as possible.
The truth is galaxies need the extra space because they are so darn big. Also, they need the extra space to take care of their children.
Take what we call the Milky Way Galaxy. It is so big it would take us billions of years to get to the other side, should we feel inclined to make such a trip. Orbiting the Milky Way are about eleven smaller pup galaxies, give or take two or three. These smaller galaxies feed off the Milky Way much like leeches. The Mother galaxy tolerates their feeding, but only for a time. After all, one day they must all leave the house and get a job sooner or later.
When these galaxies grow up they are flung off of the Mother, into more space, where they hope to find a galaxy they’re compatible with. After a few dates they collide with each other, letting tidal forces rip and shred each other until they become one big galaxy. After that they spawn off several pup galaxies of their own.
The proof of this can be seen in globular clusters. These are unfertilized eggs of millions of stars that are found on the edges of the galaxy, hopelessly spinning away, wondering what did they do to not get fertilized. Now if you’re the Milky Way you would try to find some way of shrugging them off. As of yet, she hasn’t found a way to do that, so they hang around her edges quite like the little tassel balls you find on some latina women’s dresses.
So you see, galaxies demand as much space as is attainable, not just for them, but also for their leech-like children. As it is the Universe is un-fathomably big, having enough space to allow galaxies to thrive. And they’re happy, well, for now. The Milky Way can’t wait for her all of her children to go off to college or find another galaxy to mate with. Then she can take that holiday she’s been dreaming about.
Big nod to Douglas Adams.
