The group remained Frozen for one, two, three seconds. Then the couple that was still sitting on the log declared that they were done. The girl that was freaking out agreed. The boy who was still clutching his flashlight hesitated, not wanting to leave without their friends. The couple had made their way across the clearing and was headed for the cars, back into the woods. The girl who was freaking out this began to follow them, but just as she reached the edge of the clearing she stopped. She could no longer hear the footsteps of the couples ahead of her.
And then there are four.
The girl screamed, and ran in the opposite direction, back to the clearing, back into the woods, and she made it a few steps.
And then there were three.
The last remaining girl cried, knees buckling, head swimming, indecision racking her brain. The boy with the flashlight turned to her to reassure her that they were going to make it out. But she was gone.
And then there were two.
The other boy, the one without the flashlight, began a litany of “ohmygodohmygodohmygod…” The boy with the flashlight turned to him saying it’ll be okay. But it was pointless as he was then gone.
And then there was one.
